Let's first make clear for the libel lawyers what I mean by the word "charlatan".
I mean the rather ordinary meaning, someone who is explicitly and deliberately pretending to speak with an expertise and to honesty within that expertise, but which they are not actually living up to, and not even making a reasonable attempt at so doing.
Ben Goldacre not only expresses opinions about health science matters. He makes himself out to be an honest expert debunking the incompetence and or bad faith of those others he critiques. He asserts his credentials as "Dr" Ben Goldacre, supposedly debunking "bad science" as his column and website title themselves.
He cannot defend himself on the basis of just saying he was merely citing what the official authorities tell him. He is asserting himself to be a critical authority himself, one who has supposedly studied the actual facts, the known studies, rather than just what the official authorities assert (or omit to mention) about them.
In the next post I will indicate some evidence that on the contrary, it is Ben Goldacre himself who is peddling outrageous pseudo-science, and in the face of honest truthful research to the contrary. My guess is that he is doing this as a shill of big biz corporate "health" industry interests, though this is of course not something I am in a position to prove or disprove.
Whether he is consciously "lying" or merely "just happens" to specialise in "unconsciously" self-serving falsehoods, like The Rt. Hon. Mr 40-Minutes Weapons of Mass Destruction, is besides the point.
